The Communist Party's Central and State Council Offices released a joint notice on 29 December 2013 requesting officials not to use public funding to purchase cigarettes, not to smoke in public places and to work to create smokefree government buildings.

The Union is supporting volunteers working for the smokefree Olympics in Sochi with an online training course about tobacco-free sporting environments, including communications skills on how to interact with violators of the ban.

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and other international health experts monitoring the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement negotiations taking place this week are urging governments to be mindful of the relationship between international trade agreements and national public health policies.

Members and staff from The Union joined tobacco control experts and advocates from throughout the Asia Pacific region to call on Indonesia, the fifth largest tobacco market in the world, to ratify the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and begin implementing key tobacco control policies.

A new study published in Tobacco Control shows that introducing a full range of demand-reduction tobacco control policies in Russia would save up to 3.7 million lives by 2055.
