The pandemic of tobacco-related disease, global tobacco control efforts, and countering tobacco industry interference in health policy were key topics at the Asia Pacific Region conference in Sydney, Australia this week.

 

This ground-breaking legislation secures some of the world's toughest restrictions on the distribution, sale and use of tobacco products, positioning Uganda as a regional leader for tobacco control. Full story...

 

The Union received more than 200 proposals for projects seeking funding from the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, by 24 July, the closing date for this round of grants. 

 

The Union's executive director, José Luis Castro, issued a call to action on WNTD 2015.

Highlighting the new challenges presented by the tobacco industry's aggressive legal battles against public health policy, new products like e-cigarettes and the struggle for adequate resources, he called on public health professionals to focus on the difficult work ahead.

He also outlined The Union's progress in tobacco control over the last decade, and encouraged perseverance -- to advance this vital work for improving lung health worldwide.

On May 31, World No Tobacco Day 2015, The Union calls on countries to work together to introduce and uphold the tobacco packaging and labelling laws that have proven both to help tobacco users quit and discourage others from trying these highly addictive products.

Tobacco packaging designs have become a controversial flashpoint in the ongoing struggle between the tobacco industry and countries seeking to support public health simply because package design is so effective at influencing consumers' decisions to buy – or not buy – tobacco products.
