Graphic images of the health harms caused by tobacco use will now cover 60% of the surface area of all tobacco packs in Burkina Faso.

The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Commerce signed the new legislation on April 7. It will come into force in April 2016.

Strong partnership between the Government of Burkina Faso, The Union and civil society led to this important development. As in the South East Asia region, countries across Africa are now adopting strong laws on graphic health warnings – a vital tool for encouraging smokers to quit and discouraging others from starting. Chad passed similar legislation in February this year.
