Cape Town, South Africa, is hosting The Union’s annual gathering of lung health experts from around the globe. Several thousand delegates are expected to attend during the course of the event, which runs until 6 December. Tobacco control will be a focus area at the conference.

Its theme: A New Agenda: Lung Health Beyond 2015, references the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] launched earlier this year. The only international and legally binding health treaty – the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control – is explicitly included in the SDGs.

Sustainable funding, tax measures and combatting tobacco industry interference are some of the key topics to be covered in high-level debate, symposia and poster sessions. There will also be opportunities to meet with tobacco control experts.
