The deadline for submission of abstracts the 16th World Conference on Tobacco or Health is July 11. Held in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 17-21 March 2015, organisers are particularly interested in receiving  proposals on the theme "Tobacco and Non-Communicable Diseases", as well as the global campaign for tobacco control.

A guide published by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) promoting best-practice in assessing compliance with smoke-free laws has been launched at events in seven countries to mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2014.

In conjunction with World No Tobacco Day (31 May), Chile's Ministry of Health announced the expansion of its smoke-free policy for health care facilities. A smoking ban for hospitals and health care facilities went into effect in March 2013, but designated open areas were not covered. Under the new policy, these facilities will become 100% smoke-free.

A new report published by The Union shows that the introduction of a uniform specific tax accounting for 70% of Pakistan's average cigarette price could lead to half a million smokers quitting, and reduce premature deaths among adult smokers by over 180,000. At the same time more than 27 billion rupees (US $277 million) would be generated in new cigarette tax revenues. Pakistan currently has one of the largest populations of tobacco users in the world, with over 22 million adults smoking tobacco.

The deadline for plenary and symposium proposals for the 16th Tobacco Or Health conference has been extended until 15 May 2014.

Ideas for sessions in the scientific programme on subjects such as governance, policy, advocacy and research are welcome. The conference is being held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, March 17 - 21 2015. The theme is 'Tobacco and Non-Communicable Diseases'.

All tobacco products in Nepal now carry graphic health warnings across 75% of the packaging surface area.

The legislation is a major victory for tobacco control in Nepal - pictorial warnings are proven to be one of the most effective means of reducing the appeal of tobacco products.
