On 1 June 2012, a revised law went into effect in Bulgaria that bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces. This is a considerable achievement given that a complete smoking ban was originally passed in 2009, only to be repealed in 2010 due to tobacco industry interests within the incumbent government.


The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) congratulates the Russian Federation on the adoption of a comprehensive tobacco control law, signed into force by President Vladimir Putin on 25 February 2013. The law includes establishment of 100% smokefree environments, bans on giveaways and sponsorship, restrictions on point-of-sale displays, and measures to limit tobacco industry interference.


PRESS RELEASE 25 January 2013 - Local and international experts warned this week that designated smoking areas in restaurants and workplaces, as allowed in Bangladesh's proposed Bill for Amending Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2005, will threaten the health of citizens.


Chile's President Sebastián Piñera officially launched the country's new comprehensive tobacco control legislation at a ceremony in Santiago on 1 March 2013. The new legislation bans smoking in all enclosed public places and prohibits all forms of tobacco advertising.The Union arranged for Michael R Bloomberg, financier, philanthropist and Mayor of the City of New York to speak via recorded video message at the ceremony, which was attended by Mirta Molinari, Director of The Union Mexico Office.
